Facts
A nanny is aged from 18 years upwards and needs to have a genuine interest
in children. Nannies can be qualified, having done a two year college course
and gained an N.N.E.B., BTEC, NVQ or similar certificates or they can be a
former Mothers help/aupair with several years experience but no formal qualifications.
A nannies experience or qualifications equips them to provide a stimulating,
safe and positive learning environment in which the children can develop.
A nanny's responsibilities are termed 'Nursery Duties' (looking after the
children and their belongings only). This usually includes washing, ironing
and cooking for them (and for them only) as well as cleaning their nurseries
and/or bedrooms. You will not do general household duties other than those
to do with the children. In general both parents are working and you will
be able to take full charge over the house during the day, keep the fridge
stocked and call the plumber if the pipe breaks.
It is important that you are able to stay for at least one year with
the family unless we place on a temporary basis.
Live-in nannies
Working hours are upon agreement. General hours are breakfast time until bath
time. A live-in nanny should not work more than 12 hours per day (not taking
into account evening babysitting).
You need to be flexible with babysitting and available for 1 - 2 babysitting
nights a week, upon agreement.
You will have your own private bedroom (bathroom) at least and aome of the
families offer a self contained flat for their nanny. Some families choose
to give additional benefits, such as use of a car, gym card, mobile phone
and/or travel pass.
It is common for the live-in nanny to receive two full days off per week
and holidays are negotiable although four weeks, plus bank holidays is standard
and the current legislation.
Salary: £250 - £400 net per week. This is the amount you will
get per week after tax deductions have been made.
Salaries are totally dependent on the your age and experience and Peek-a-boo
will advise on a realistic remuneration obtainable by each individual applicant
Live-out nannies
Many families looking for a permanent nanny are now choosing a daily nanny
in preference to a live-in girl. Some nannies feel that their life style is
better suited to work set hours. Normal hours are 8.00am-6pm with some small
variations. A daily nanny should not work for more than ten hours a day. Babysitting
is paid overtime, unless otherwise agreed
Some families choose to give additional benefits, such as use of a car or
travel pass. Make sure the family lives within an hour from your home; otherwise
you will find that your days will get extremely long.
Holidays are negotiable although four weeks, plus bank holidays is standard

Temporary carers
Qualified or experienced nannies who are available on a short notice to help
parents with short term help and/or emergency childcare need. A temporary
carer should be flexible and can be both live-in and live-out. The general
rule if you are temping is that you must be prepared to do anything. If you
want temporary positions, make sure you are flexible with the duties and pay.
Anything goes! Temporary positions can last from 1
day up to a few months.
