Au pair questions

Q: Why choose Peek-a-boo Aupairs?

A: We are a large aupair agency in central London. Our aupair consultants are multi-lingual staff, that are friendly and easy to talk to. We provide a back up service throughout the Au Pair's stay in the family home, run courses, pub nights, events and much more. It is important to use a good and reputable agency when travelling as an aupair as we can help you with difficult situations and support. Please be very careful of internet only based agencies, and people who contact you directly.

Q: Am I suitable to work as au pair?

A: If you are at least 18 and a european citizen. You want to study English or learn a new culture. You are willing to make the effort of living away from home, supporting a Host Family and their children and household. You are happy to meet new people and are able to communicate well. They should have common sense and be flexible.

Q: What are au pair duties?

A: An au pair will be expected to help with basic housework such as ironing and cleaning as well as helping out with the children, getting them dressed, playing with them, help at bathtimes, mealtimes, etc.

Q: How do I apply?

A: To apply with Peek-a-boo Aupairs for a placement you will need:

1) Application Form

2) References: Minimum 1 Childcare Reference and 1 Character Reference. However the more references you can send the better. The references must either be in English or translated into English, they must include names and daytime telephone numbers so that references can be checked. THEY MUST NOT BE FROM MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY OR CLOSE FRIENDS.

3) A ‘Dear Family’ letter. Telling a prospective Host Family all about yourself, your family background, your experience with children, your hobbies, the area you live, your education, and your ambitions

Q: Where can I be placed as an a Au Pair?

A: We place Au Pairs throughout London and the rest of the UK. We also place au pairs in Europe, USA and Australia. Our families are often known to us and generally of a very high standard in nice areas with nice homes.

Q: When can I travel and for how long?

A: We can place Au Pairs throughout the year, and expect our Au Pairs to normally commit to stay with their Host Family for a minimum period of 10 months or longer. We feel it is important at this stage to point out that coming to the United Kingdom is not a holiday, it’s a way of being in the UK to learn the language, culture and meet new people, and have a new experience. The friendships formed when you are in the UK and the memories you take back with you can last a life time.

Q: Are there any rules I need to know about to work as Au Pair?

A: It depends what country you are applying to. In the UK the standard is £70-110 per week and 25-35 hours plus babysitting but we also place aupair plus and mothers helps that will work up to 45 hours per week for up to £200 a week.

Q: Can I study English? Where can I study?

A: There are many language schools around in all English speaking countries. Most language schools offer lessons to au pairs 2/3 times per week. Normally it's for 2 or 3 hour periods. The studies should fit in with your work schedule and the family's routine. However different schools offer different times, depending on the location of the school. The aupair agency can help you find a suitable school.

Q: Can I change families if I am not happy?

A: We try to ensure that every placement is perfect, however we do realize that things can occasionally go wrong and in these circumstances can help the Au Pair to change families without a problem.

Q: Do I get general help from the agency?

A: You will be asked to come in to the agency and say hello when you first arrive and pick up a welcome pack and also a list of other aupairs in your area.We are here to give support to an Au Pair during their stay. We can give advice regarding language schools, holidays, childcare, friends, etc. You can always call or email us and we are here to help throughout your stay. We keep in touch with events and pubnights each month and trips organized by our Agency. What is the first thing I should do?
